This explains what happens to your information when you visit truthbehindbars.com or buy something from us. It's written to be read, not skimmed past.
The short version
- We collect very little: your email address and the details of your order.
- We never see your card details. Gumroad handles payment.
- We don't sell your information. We use a Meta (Facebook) pixel to see whether our ads lead to sales; visitors in Europe and the UK are asked first.
- You can ask us to see, correct or delete what we hold, at any time.
Who we are
Truth Behind Bars is an independent publisher of documentary true-crime products, operated from Pakistan. We are responsible for the personal information described in this policy. You can reach us at [email protected].
What we collect
When you buy something
Gumroad runs our checkout and shares the following with us, so we can support your order:
- Your email address
- Your name, if you enter one at checkout
- What you bought, the price, the date, and a purchase ID
- The country recorded for the sale, which is used for tax
When you email us
Your email address and whatever you write, so we can reply.
When you visit the site
Our host, Cloudflare, processes technical information such as your IP address and browser type in order to deliver pages and protect the site from attacks. We don't use this to identify you.
The page also runs the Meta (Facebook) pixel, which tells Meta that a browser viewed the book page or clicked a Buy button, along with the price, your IP address, browser details and Meta's cookie. Gumroad reports completed purchases to the same pixel. We use this only to measure and improve our Facebook and Instagram ads. See Cookies for how to say no.
We never receive your card number, bank details, billing address or phone number.
Payments are handled by Gumroad. Gumroad, Inc. is the merchant of record for every order. It runs the checkout, processes your payment through its payment partners, calculates and collects any sales tax or VAT, and issues your receipt. Your payment details go directly to Gumroad and its processors and are never visible to us. Gumroad handles that information under its own privacy policy.
How we use it
- To deliver what you bought, and to help if a download fails
- To send you corrected or updated editions of what you bought, and important notices about your purchase
- To process refunds
- To reply when you contact us
- To keep the records that tax and accounting law requires
We only send news about future releases if you've agreed to it, for example by choosing to follow us on Gumroad. Every one of those emails includes a way to unsubscribe.
Our legal basis
If you're in the UK or the EU, the law requires us to state why we're allowed to use your information:
- Contract: to deliver your purchase, send updated editions, and handle refunds
- Legal obligation: to keep tax and accounting records
- Legitimate interests: to answer your messages, prevent fraud and keep the site secure
- Consent: for any news or marketing emails, and for the Meta advertising cookie, both of which you can withdraw at any time
Who processes it
| Service | What it does |
|---|---|
| Gumroad | Checkout, payment, tax, receipts, file delivery, refunds, and emails to customers. Merchant of record. |
| Gumroad's payment processors | Processing your card or PayPal payment on Gumroad's behalf. |
| Cloudflare | Hosting this website and protecting it from attacks. |
| Meta Platforms | Measuring our Facebook and Instagram ads through the Meta pixel: page views, Buy clicks and purchases. Meta uses this under its own privacy policy. |
| Google Fonts | Serving the typefaces this site uses. Your browser requests them from Google, which receives your IP address. |
| Our email provider | Sending and receiving email with you. |
Each one receives only what it needs to do its job. We don't sell or rent your information to anyone. The only information shared for advertising is what the Meta pixel measures, described under Cookies.
International transfers
Most of these providers are based in the United States, so your information may be processed outside the country you live in. They rely on recognised legal safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, for those transfers.
Cookies
The book page uses the Meta (Facebook) pixel, which sets an advertising cookie so we can tell whether our Facebook and Instagram ads lead to sales. It records page views, clicks on the Buy buttons, and, through Gumroad, completed purchases.
If you're in Europe or the UK, the pixel only loads after you choose Accept on the notice at the bottom of the page; No thanks keeps it off. Anyone can block it with a browser setting or extension, or turn off ad personalisation in their Facebook account settings.
The page also loads a small script from Gumroad so that checkout can open without leaving the site. Gumroad may set cookies it needs to process payments and prevent fraud, and its checkout may use the same Meta pixel to report purchases. Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary security cookie.
How long we keep it
Order records are kept for as long as tax and accounting law requires, and for as long as they're needed to support your purchase, for example to re-send the file or send an updated edition. Emails are kept until the conversation is resolved and no longer needed. Gumroad keeps transaction records under its own retention policy.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- Tell you what we hold about you and give you a copy
- Correct anything that's wrong
- Delete your information
- Stop or limit how we use it
- Stop sending you any news emails
Email [email protected] and we'll respond within 30 days. We may need to confirm that you own the email address first. If we're legally required to keep a record, such as a tax record of a sale, we'll tell you.
If you're in the UK or the EU, you can also complain to your data protection authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office). If you're a California resident: we don't sell or share personal information as the CCPA defines it, and we won't treat you differently for exercising your rights.
Payment records are held by Gumroad. For requests about those, we'll help, or you can contact Gumroad directly.
Children
Our products document real crimes and executions and are written for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we'll delete it.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS. We don't store payment details; payment security is handled by Gumroad and its processors. We keep the information we hold to the minimum described here.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version appears here with a new date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll say so on the site.
